Things to Do

Every year the University of Pennsylvania hosts the Penn Relays, the world's oldest and most widely recognized relay meet. This historic event draws substantial crowds to the campus to watch some of the world's top track and field athletes compete on Franklin Field. Many even go on to begin Olympic careers. Throughout this three-day celebration, there are multiple events such as the pole vault, 100-meter dash, and javelin alongside an accompanying carnival.

University City also hosts free monthly outdoor concerts during the summer months as part of the 40th Street Summer Series, held at the alfresco space between 39th and Walnut Streets. Admission is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring coolers, food, and blankets to share and enjoy the show.

The annual ODUNDE Festival is one of the most significant and longstanding African American street festivals in the country, bringing a taste of Africa to South Street, one of Philly's oldest and historic African American neighborhoods.
